Oh Bermuda. You are the island getaway of my dreams. Direct flights from several East Coast cities make you so easy to visit. British sophistication combines with island relaxation into my perfect getaway. Where else do men wear short and knee socks to dinner? High tea is a must, as it walking the pink coral beaches, and sipping a rum swizzle at the notorious Swizzle Inn. During our March visit we found bright skies but a cool breeze so no ocean dips for us. Luckily, there were so many historic sights to discover we never missed swimming.
The Keep citadel and the Bermuda Maritime Museum has hours of interesting sights and information. Bermuda was developed as a British Naval Base to control the sea lanes of North American after the Revolutionary war. The dockyard began construction in the early 19th century. The Keep citadel was active during both World War I & II.
There are so many places to visit. Beautiful resorts with gardens and croquet lawns. Search out a garden with a Bermuda moongate-locals say walking through one as a newlywed brings good luck. The Waterlot Inn has been around since the 17th century. Long ago it’s basement was used to store ships’ cargo moored off shore; now it’s revered as the premier steakhouse of the island. Stroll through downtown Hamilton and stop by the Birdcage. A specially designed structure protected the Bermuda Police while they directed traffic at the busy intersection. No longer in use but tourists can sometimes still get a photo-op with a policeman! Visit the the town of St. George with tall ships docked at the port. Wander a bit further and find the Unfinished Church-a beautiful 19th century ruin. Stroll the many miles of beaches or through the capital of Hamilton enjoying the brightly painted building.
The historic Castle Harbor Hotel, the grand dame of 1930’s Bermudian resorts, has been reinvented as Tucker’s Point Resort, a Rosewood property. With lovely views on the the Castle Harbor, the resort caters to guests every need. With lovely pools, an outstanding spa, and delicious dining Tucker’s Point caters to guests’ every request. I must say the concierge exceeded expectations of advise and service. I look forward to visiting Bermuda and this lovely resort again.
