Happy February! I wish our DC February looked like this photo. But we’ve had more rain and grey days than bright sunshine and snow. This month brings so much with it like the anticipation of spring, Valentine’s Day, my birthday, the Super Bowl, President’s day, the list keeps going. I remember in college it brought some of the first spring crocus bulbs blooming up through the snow. What that also meant was Ground Hog Day, Valentine’s Day candy. How can you pack so much into the shortest month of the year?
February reminds me of delicious sweets. Not only just chocolate but also tangy fruit candies. In college we’d scour the big box stores to find the Brach’s cinnamon hearts and cherry juju jel hearts. They were such delicious and terrible candy treats. I’m not sure if they’re gluten free but I do not search them out on the store shelves anymore. I think instead this year I’m going to try my luck making Pâte de Fruit or natural fruit candies made with pectin. I love those jelly little squares even more than the store bought candy. This project will surely be revisited on the blog later in the month.
I’m excited for all that is happening this month. But in the meantime I’ll keep dreaming of a winter blizzard that actually happens and satisfying my craving for snow with a bit of travel.
